Match Report vs Mech Eng 22-02-08

Enthusiasm was high was in the camp after two great performances in the last few weeks, so there was reason for optimism about today’s game, despite the fact that Mech Eng have been very tight at the back so far this season.

Having got out there and eventually got onto the pitch the conditions were not favourable to either side with strong winds present from the start. This led to nervous play from the boots to start with and Mech Eng adapted the best to the conditions and started to create a few chances that were scrambled away by the defence and also saved well by James. We soon started to get a bit back into our stride and created a few chances, with Christian just shooting over, but unfortunately the final ball was not quite there of which the whole team was guilty. After a furious first half in which Jez flattened one of their places when he tried to go past me and good use of the subs from Tim on the touch line, half time arrived 0-0.

The main message was that we needed more composure on the ball and that even though Mech Eng were creating chances none of them were really troubling us and that our chance would come. Off we started the second half and we managed to contain Mech Eng for the most part even though one of their players was very quick on the ball and caused us some trouble, either James or the defence managed to stop him in the end. Terrence was putting his body on the line once again with a few sneaky slide challenges, illegal but effective, and a clearance off the line from Jez. But just as it looked like Mech Eng might get the breakthrough a clearance from their defender was scuffed under good pressure from Ian and broke for Dan to see the keeper make a step and then dive for the left, leaving Dan the opportunity to bury it in the goal and on give him a birthday goal. Excellent!! To see the Mech Eng boys faces was after was scored was great. After the goal the boots started to relax and then the flowing football, with some nices touches from Mark in midfield, that we have been playing recently started to come to the fore. Ian went close on several occasions more notably a header from a corner and a massive diagonal cross pitch ball was only just inches to long from Wolfy connecting and possibly scoring a stunner that jurgen klinsmann would have been proud of. Our attacking play did open us up every now and then to a Mech Eng counter attack but James, defence and the midfield tracking back, Bobby and well everyone did more than their fair share, were more than capable of snuffing out the threat. James did however pull out a stunning save from one of their players, diving to his left he stuck out a hand and stopped a shot flying into the opposite corner, spectacular. Then they called time but tried to sneak a corner at the end to try and steal a hard fought victory from the boots.

Final score 1-0. Great result considering we didn’t play that well through out. Well played lads 3 from 3 roll on Team Bath Staff in a couple of weeks.
