Boots 1 ACE 2
What can I say about this that hasn’t already been said
before?
It was a miserable day but sprits were high and with a
strong boots squad I think we were hoping to get back to winning ways against
an ACE side who have been struggling of late. There is no two ways about this
the Boots dominated from start to finish always looking the more likely team to
score, peppering the ACE penalty area with cross after cross but, in fairness,
not too many shots on target. However the boots lost there shape a bit for
around 5 min and ACE got a man over down our left flank, fired in an excellent
shot with which James had no chance of saving, Boots 0 ACE 1. The Boots
responded to this with some excellent attacking play and forced a good few
saves from the ACE keeper. A couple of incidents stood out a cross face of goal
ball from right to left that looked inches away from been in and what looked to
be a nailed on goal from Mike that simply found its way into the keepers hands.
We knew at half time that that this game was ours for the
taking and once again started to threaten the ACE goal. If anything for the
first 5 min we were guilty of too many shots from long range that didn’t test
the keeper, but it was a strategy worth a try on a wet day. Then about 6 or seven
minutes into the half disaster struck again ACE, again go a man over, put in a
shot from a wide position that I think was going to be saved by James, but got
a cruel deflection that just took it inside the left post, a great shot but an
unlucky goal to concede. In days of old boots heads would have dropped at this
point but we battled on and before long Jez got us back in the game with an
amazing run and an even better shot, perhaps one of the nicest goals scored for
the Boots ever. With plenty of time left it was game on and the way we were
playing we could easily have kicked on to win. Ian almost got the equaliser but
ended up hurting himself in a goal line 50-50 with the keeper. After that we
put in numerous efforts with Mike, Dan, Wolfy, Jez and even James all coming within a whisker of
scoring. Football is a cruel game and the score stayed as it was, credit to ACE
for a fine display of smash and grab football with clinical finishing.
Things are still looking good for the boots and on another
day we would have won it 4-0, I can’t really find fault with anything apart
from a lack of clinical finishing that the whole team is guilty of!
Iron Boot: Ian for his challenge on the keeper that left him
with a sore ankle (although I’m tempted give it to Terrence for his wearing of
a sleeveless shirt on a hideous cold and wet day).
Skill Boot: Jez for his excellent goal
